A2 — THE EXPANSION

German A2: the complete guide

The complete German A2 guide: the can-dos beyond A1, the grammar that defines the level, the 1,300-word vocabulary, honest timelines, and the Goethe A2 exam.

VON GERMANIUM

Editorial desk — reviewed against Goethe A1–A2 frameworks

A2 is the level where German becomes yours in daily life: you narrate the past, connect opinions with reasons, handle offices and appointments, and follow the main points of clear speech on familiar matters. It is also the level with the worst reputation — the A1→A2 plateau — which this guide is built to disarm: know the scope, and the plateau becomes a schedule.

What A2 adds beyond A1

The grammar scope, in learning order

StageMaterialThe trap it carries
Weeks 1–5Dative: articles, pronouns, verbs with their casedem/der/dem/den — and helfen + Dativ class verbs
Weeks 5–9Subordinate clauses (weil, dass, wenn, ob)Verb slides to the end — the A1 sentence bracket finally closes
Weeks 9–13Two-way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen), Präteritum of modals/sein/habenWo → Dativ, wohin → Akkusativ — position vs motion
Weeks 13–17Adjective endings (after der-words, ein-words, with no article)The three-table system — learned one table at a time, in sentences
Weeks 17–20Future (werden), Konjunktiv II politeness, genitive introductionwürde + Infinitiv is the spoken form; Konjunktiv of modals first

Twenty weeks of daily sessions to absorb — the grammar method is unchanged: one rule per day, in sentences, trap named. The deep-dive details live in the A2 grammar page.

Vocabulary: from 650 to 1,300

A2 roughly doubles the word count to ~1,300 — but the additions are differently shaped than A1's: more abstract nouns (die Meinung, die Umwelt), more connectors and particles (deshalb, trotzdem, nämlich), and the verb+case pairs that make sentences adult. The domain-by-domain map is here.

How long A2 takes

Roughly 150–200 hours on top of A1 — the same size, but gains feel subtler because survival is already banked. At an hour a day: five to seven months. The compression trick is the same as ever — no skipped reviews, no re-deciding; the 77-day plan reaches the A2 gate at day 077 on that arithmetic.

The exam at the end

Goethe A2 (Start Deutsch 2): same four-part shape as A1, one level more — opinions with reasons, a sustained past-tense message, planning with a partner. The preparation checklist is here; the speaking topics worth rehearsing here.

Is A2 German enough for everyday life in Germany?

For most daily interactions — shopping, appointments, small talk, filling forms, following the main point of office conversations — yes. Institutions at full speed (courts, dense bureaucracy, workplace jargon) still outrun A2 ears; B1 is the institutional level. For an A2 learner newly arrived in Germany, daily life works and grows daily — that is the level's design.

What grammar is in German A2?

Five systems, in learning order: the dative case (articles, pronouns, and the verbs that govern it); subordinate clauses with weil, dass, wenn (verb to the end); two-way prepositions (wohin → accusative, wo → dative); adjective endings after der-words, ein-words and with no article; and the politeness grammar of werden plus Konjunktiv II modals (ich könnte, ich hätte gern). Each system, stated as its core rule with its trap, fills about twenty weeks of daily sessions.

How many words for German A2?

Roughly 1,300 — double the A1 floor, per the Goethe wordlist family. The additions are shaped differently: more abstract nouns (die Meinung, die Umwelt), the connector layer (deshalb, trotzdem, nämlich) that carries connected speech, and the verb+case pairs (helfen + Dativ, warten auf + Akk.) that make sentences sound adult. The domain map shows where they cluster.
